How about you just make for each dificulty the monsters get a higher tier armour? something like
-childsplay/easy= 100% damage taken
-normal= 95% damage taken
-hard= 90%% damage taken
-extreme= 85% damage taken
-****= 80% damage taken
also this is just a suggestion if u want to change the system.
