Need your feedback and approval for these spells #2
« on: August 04, 2012, 02:59:01 am »
I just finished making some new spells for Galeoth. I wonder what can be done to improve them further and make them truly awesome.

FREEZING FIELD

The Hero summons extremely unstable ice magic that saturates the target area with random icy explosions. Each explosion deals 100 damage to enemy units caught in its AoE. Lasts 5 seconds. Explosion rate is 20 explosions/second.

Channeling

CHILLING BLAST

Blasts the target area with multiple waves of damaging frost that deals 250 damage and slows nearby enemies by 40% for 3 seconds.

There are 2 other skills in the test map but I only need you to test and give me feedback for the two spells I listed. Thanks in advance.

They are pretty :)

And the channeling nuke one (freezing field) at least has some skill aspect to it (timing/placement) rather than just being a straight nuke, so that's good.

Improvements... it's hard to suggest improvements to spells that at heart are just straight nukes with new animations! But then again as a PvE campaign, I don't know what else a spell can or should do - buff yourself, debuff/disable others, do damage is pretty much it.

You should chuck a list of buffs/debuffs/disables and damage numbers into a random generator and see what combinations come out and use those in new spells.

Well most are too campaign-cliche. I need a breakthrough, an innovative and unique buff/disable. Maybe you can suggest one?

Kudos to Valkyr for his idea of this 'cool' spell. It is really great. I feel really honored to be able to work with him ;D

By the way this darn skill took me 3 hours of coding and another 20' to fix and improve after I present it to Aero and Valkyr. Just FYI ofc, it is not like I'm whining or anything.

FROST SHARD

Hurl an enchanted frost shard towards the target that greatly damages it. If the target succumbs to the damage it will explode and unleash smaller shards of ice from its body that damage nearby enemies for 50% of the original target's damage.

Currently the main target dmg is 1000 and the secondary dmg is 500. AoE is 1000 for the sake of visual and eye candy availability.

I like it! Good animation too.

At the moment it's still a simple AOE nuke, let's see if we can think of something to make it more interesting...

I'll tell you what I can come up with.

Actually Valkyr and I have found a type of debuff that will be applied to the target if it doesn't get killed. But suggestions are always welcome.

Two new spells ;D

MAGMA PULSE

Summons violent pulses of flame that scorch all enemies caught in the AoE, dealing damage per second to them.

Channeling

STORM SEEKER

The Hero calls upon a powerful storm of crackling energy, which strikes weakened enemies with deadly bolts of lightning that deal 50 damage each. The storm is charged with malevolent will, and will seek out only the most injured targets for its armor shattering blasts. Cooldown between each strike is 0.5 second. Lasts 30 seconds.

And as usual, Doom and I've got a pretty serious debate with Aero about this.
Aero, as typical of him, always want to modify Doom's skills in questionable ways.
In this case, the proposal for Storm Seeker is as follows:
- Make it activated/deactivated at will.
- Change the ability to be based on charges; when it is used, it will gain charges, and if there are enemies near Fradz, it will automatically attack them, losing charges in the process.
None of them are good enough, but both of them are hard to code.
But Aero doesn't believe that. Worse, he also refuses to add the ability if Doom doesn't make these unworthy changes.
So, yeah, I really doubt we'll see it in-game.

Along the shore the cloud waves break,
The twin suns sink behind the lake,
The shadows lengthen
In Carcosa.

Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through the skies,
But stranger still is
Lost Carcosa.

Songs that the Hyades shall sing,
Where flap the tatters of the King,
Must die unheard in
Dim Carcosa.

Song of my soul, my voice is dead,
Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed
Shall dry and die in
Lost Carcosa.

Thanks hamza for helping me out. But it seems like his reply didn't describe the ability clearly enough so here is the official description and test map of the ability after some heavy balancing.

Currently I made it so that the storm will target the unit with least amount of HP which is very effective for clearing mods and boss adds but I myself think that it should be least HP percentage so that in boss fights the boss will be prioritized. What is your opinion on this? Which option should I choose?

MYSTIC STORM

The Hero calls upon a powerful storm of crackling energy, which strikes weakened enemies with deadly bolts of lightning that deal 50 damage each. The storm is charged with malevolent will, and will seek out only the most injured targets for its armor shattering blasts. The storm's destructive power intensified with each successful hit, allowing the damage of the next hit to be 5% greater than the last one. The armor reduction debuff is removed upon spell end or caster death. The storm lasts for 30 seconds or until the caster perishes. Each level reduces the cooldown between each strike by 0.1s with the initial value being 1.25s/hit.

My opinion is make it effective against bosses, as there is little need for clearing mobs as of yet, and the skill inherently sucks at that (single target damage/-armor)

Then should I recode the spell to make it target units with least percentage of HP? Because that should perfectly fit your proposed choice.
